Making Moves

My lack of employment is well-documented on this here blog, my wedding blog, and Twitter. After briefly working for the search-engine-company-that-shall-not-be-named earlier this summer (hint, it rhymes with shmoogle), I’ve been searching for a job and coming up with nothing. I won’t lie, it sucks.

Could/should I get some kind of retail or other part-time job? Yes. And quite frankly, I’m not sure why I haven’t. I don’t have an excuse. Could/should I do more in my search for a full-time job? Again, yes. And again, I don’t have an excuse for why I’m not. Actually, I do. See Day 27 of my 30DBJ.

But things are looking up. I’ve been in contact with a recruiter/career advice professional who is going to help me with my resume, cover letter, and job search strategies. Also, I’m finally going to get some experience in the event planning industry! Two Saturdays next month I’ll be volunteering at weddings in DC with one of the top event planning companies in the area (which will remain nameless.) Even though I’m not earning a paycheck, I’m getting experience. In the event planning industry experience is EVERYTHING.

Hopefully a revamp of my resume and a bit of networking will really get the ball rolling in my quest for permanent employment. I’m ready to work. I’m ready to stop goofing around. Stay tuned!

Are you job searching? Have you gone through long bouts of unemployment? Tell me about your experience.

Hey Lady – I hope my last comment didn't put you off. I just deal with a lot of students in your situation and I see what not actively searching does to them. (Gets them down and no where closer to getting a job.) I think volunteering (more importantly: getting experience) is an awesome idea and will definitely help you get into the scene. Glad to hear that things are looking up and I know you'll find something absolutely awesome… then work your life away (50/60 hours a week) like I do and totally regret getting a job 😉

No no no! Not at all. Ugh, and I knew you were going to think that 😦 It definitely inspired me to write this post, though.Trust me, I've thought about getting a PT job and like I said, I have no excuse not to. I think it's a great idea and I might look into getting one just so I have something to do. But I really believe (because I know myself) that my search for a full-time job would suffer. I just know it. So that's kind of what's holding me back. So please, don't think for one second I was put off by your comment 🙂 Grr sometimes I hate the internet!

My husband has been looking for a job in the DC area since April. He is currently working but making commission only which sucks so he's been trying to find something with a more steady income. He's barely gotten any interviews despite having a degree and lots of experience. It's incredibly frustrating for us both. I've suggested he get a part time job as well and that's an idea he's not thrilled with. I think I know what company you are volunteering with. I looked into the same thing two years ago b/c I'm interested in doing event planning as well, but then got engaged and had to plan my own wedding so I never ended up doing it. I think it's a great plan.

No actually it was Wish Special Events. You can sign up to volunteer with their wedding events and if you do a good job on several events they may consider hiring you. You should contact them if you haven't already.

I'm secretly jealous that you're working with an event planner. I would love to get in that line of work! You'll find something. Two of my best friends had awful times finding jobs over the last year. It stinks out there right now.

  6. Wow!!! Is this wedding thing what we were going to talk about at lunch? I want to know more! Email me? But that’s exciting. Experience is definitely very important, so that’s great! And you’ll get to see the wedding world from a different perspective! Congrats!! and yes, email me!
